Versatility is a hallmark of the Juilliard-trained Wynton Marsalis, one that has served him well. As music director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center), it’s clear that style and experience are leading characteristics as well. Under his direction, the Orchestra performs a vast repertoire, from rare historic compositions to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works. Arrangements by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, and Thelonious Monk contribute to the mix. Marsalis became the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in music for his oratorio “Blood on the Fields,” which was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center.
